Snorkeling or diving in Bali

Snorkeling or diving in Bali

Are you also a fan of snorkeling or diving? Then there are some beautiful places in Bali that are worth visiting (underwater).

Snorkel or dive at Menjangan island

This is a real snorkel “pearl” of Bali. Menjangan is a nature reserve where you will be brought by boat from the island of Bali. Entrance fees are requested to be allowed to snorkel at Menjangan (thanks to the deer population on the island in Indonesia). The inhabitants of Bali do this to protect the biodiversity of the underwater world. It is a snorkel spot with beautiful coral and a “wall” that goes down to about 55 meters. You suddenly go from 2 meters to 55 meters depth which is a special effect. The water is suddenly a lot colder. In the underwater “wall” you can see rocks, caves and coral along where you can also dive beautifully. Here you can find both snorkelers and divers, so there is something for everyone! The visibility in the underwater world of Menjangan island is beautiful has a clear view of about 40 to 50 meters. In the shallow part you mainly see small fish. If you go deeper there will also be big fish. Sometimes there are even manta rays, reef sharks and whale sharks. This is sporadic so if you spot them you are in luck! Menjangan island is number three of Discovery Channel’s “Best Snorkel Spots in the World”. So put this spot on your to do list even if it’s not cheap!

Diving to the “USS Liberty wreck”

This is one of the most beautiful dive spots in Bali, located at Amed. Besides the fact that this is one of the most special shipwrecks to dive in, it is also special how this ship got there. The USS Liberty ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo in 1942 and stranded on the coast of Tulamben. At the time, a wreck near Amed, which was still on the beach, was subsequently returned to the sea by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1962. In the years since, the “USS Liberty” has become a beautiful place for coral and beautiful small and large fish. In addition to the different types of small and large fish, sharks and rays are regularly seen. The shipwreck at Tulamben is about 30 meters deep and is therefore mainly for the more experienced divers. The visibility is very good, this is due to the crystal clear water in Amed.

In addition to diving to the USS Liberty wreck, it is also wonderful to put on your mask from Amed beach and go snorkelling from there. Also definitely worth it because there is a lot to see underwater in Amed.

Snorkel or dive with special fish at Padangbai

Padangbai is one of the best snorkeling spots in Bali, it is about an hour and a half drive from Sanur or an hour drive from Ubud. Padangbai is a great snorkeling spot for families and / or novice snorkelers because the water is fairly calm. It is a great opportunity to explore the underwater life in Bali. Snorkeling is possible all year round.

Snorkel with sea turtles at Gili Trawangan

The greatest chance of swimming with sea turtles is at Turtle point on Gili Trawangan. Turtle point is located on the east coast of Gili Trawangan. But there is more to see than just sea turtles. This area is also known for its beautiful colorful coral. The locals also call it ‘coral gardens’. You will find a beautiful piece of coral on the east coast of Gili Meno (1 of the 3 Gili islands between Lombok and Bali). This is a place you cannot reach from the country. The advantage of this is that it is nice and quiet!
